What types of flow control valves are there?

Flow control valves are classified as follows:

• Throttle valves
• Flow control valves

For a throttle valve, the greater the pressure difference, the greater the volumetric flow, since the volumetric flow depends on the pressure difference at the throttling point.

In contrast, a flow control valve (a quantity control valve) is equipped with a pressure compensation system. This ensures that the set flow rate remains constant, even if the pressure differential across the valve changes.

Throttle valves

Throttle valves are a type of flow control valve. They regulate the flow rate of compressed air in the direction of flow. A throttle plate is used to regulate volumetric flow rates. The throttle is a narrowing of the pipeline’s cross-section—it creates a local resistance to flow.

Time-delay valves

Time-delay valves switch after a signal is received and a preset time has elapsed. In addition to logic valves, these Festo products are used, among other things, in simple pneumatic control systems.
